Volvo VNX: Power and Precision for the Toughest Jobs
Image-VOLVO Trucks
In the demanding world of North American heavy-duty transport and construction, Volvo Trucks is opening a new chapter with the all-new Volvo VNX. Designed specifically for the toughest vocational applications, this truck combines structural strength, powerful engine performance, advanced safety technologies and digital solutions engineered to maximise uptime.
Unveiled in October 2026, the VNX marks a strategic milestone for Volvo Trucks in North America. It is the manufacturer's third all-new truck platform introduced in less than three years, following the VNL and VNR. However, the VNX has a clearly defined mission: to perform where mechanical stresses, heavy loads and challenging working conditions push vehicles to their limits.
A Chassis Built to Take the Strain
Strength begins at the core of the vehicle. The Volvo VNX features high-strength, heat-treated steel frame rails designed to withstand the demanding conditions associated with heavy-duty applications. Volvo offers configurations designed for gross combination weights of up to 160,000 lb, with higher ratings possible under specific approvals.
The chassis layout has also been developed to simplify bodybuilder installations and the integration of specialised equipment. From dump trucks and concrete mixers to logging vehicles and heavy-haul combinations, the objective is to make the truck easier to adapt to the demands of each operation.
Durability extends to the smallest details. An all-metal grille reinforced with steel mesh helps protect engine components while maintaining airflow. The metal bumper is available in three configurations to accommodate frame extensions, specialised equipment and a central towing pin.
The Tough Shield windshield adds another layer of protection. According to Volvo, it provides twice the resistance to pointed impacts and thermal shock compared with standard tempered glass, together with five times the scratch resistance.
The D13 Engine: Up to 540 Horsepower
At the heart of the VNX is Volvo's D13 engine, available with outputs ranging from 405 to 540 hp. Maximum torque reaches 1,950 lb-ft, approximately 2,644 Nm. For controlled descents and demanding braking situations, the engine brake delivers up to 630 braking horsepower, according to the manufacturer.
This powertrain is designed to meet the requirements of heavy haulage, construction and severe-duty operations. It is paired with Volvo's I-Shift transmission, available in 12-, 13- or 14-speed configurations, depending on the specification.
For low-speed manoeuvring, the transmission options and dedicated vocational functions are intended to improve control during repeated starts, loaded movements and operation on challenging terrain.
The powertrain is certified to meet U.S. EPA 2027 emissions standards, with an upgraded aftertreatment system designed to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions.
A New Approach to Manoeuvring
Image-VOLVO Trucks
On a construction site, a few centimetres can make all the difference. The VNX introduces Remote Steer, a feature that allows the driver to steer the truck from outside the cab at speeds of up to 5 mph, approximately 8 km/h.
This technology is designed for situations where visibility from the driver's seat is restricted or exceptionally precise movements are required, including certain specialised construction and vocational applications.
Another feature for demanding terrain is Terrain Brake, which helps prevent sudden forward or backward movement on slopes and uneven surfaces. The aim is to give drivers greater control in environments where trucks must move slowly, stop frequently and restart under load.
Safety at the Heart of the Design
The VNX incorporates Volvo's advanced safety platform developed for its latest North American trucks. Front pedestrian detection is standard and monitors the area ahead of the vehicle. Optional blind-spot detection on both sides alerts the driver when a pedestrian is detected close to the truck or trailer.
The cab also benefits from a reinforced structure. Volvo reports that it uses one-third more ultra-high-strength steel than its previous vocational models. Driver-side curtain airbags are also available, depending on configuration.
Available camera systems provide additional visibility around the vehicle. On crowded construction sites, where earthmoving equipment, workers and heavy trucks operate in close proximity, these technologies are designed to help reduce risks and support driver awareness.
The Driver Remains Central to the Design
Image-VOLVO Trucks
Strength does not come at the expense of comfort. Volvo has focused on sound insulation and vibration reduction to help limit fatigue during long working days. Volvo Dynamic Steering, available depending on configuration, reduces steering effort and helps improve vehicle control.
The range includes several cab configurations: the VNX 300 with a day cab, the VNX 440 with a 42-inch sleeper and the VNX 640 with a 62-inch mid-roof sleeper. These options allow the range to cover local vocational work as well as longer-distance heavy-haul operations.
Connectivity Designed to Reduce Downtime
The VNX features a factory-installed 4G telematics gateway. Remote Diagnostics monitors vehicle parameters and identifies potential issues, helping fleet managers plan maintenance before minor problems lead to unexpected downtime.
With Remote Programming, software and selected vehicle parameters can be updated remotely, reducing the need for workshop visits. Volvo Connect brings together information on fuel consumption, vehicle location and safety, helping operators monitor their fleets, improve utilisation and manage operating costs.
Three Configurations, One Mission: Hard Work
Image-VOLVO Trucks
The new Volvo VNX is available in tractor and vocational configurations, depending on the model, with axle layouts designed to suit a wide range of applications. Target sectors include construction, concrete transport, logging, agriculture, municipal operations and heavy haulage.
With the VNX, Volvo Trucks aims to combine a reinforced vehicle architecture with electronic control systems, advanced safety features and digital tools developed for real-world working conditions.
The VNX is therefore more than a new truck design. It is a technical response to a market where durability, precise manoeuvring and maximum vehicle availability are essential to operational success.

ARTIKEL 2 • ZWARE VRACHTWAGENS • ENGINEERING • TECHNOLOGIE
Drie uitvoeringen, één opdracht: zwaar werk leveren
Image-VOLVO Trucks
