History of the site - Since 1821
It was a Frenchman, originally from Paris, Jacques-Aubin DOLBEAU, who first noticed the white rocks bordering the Sambre. A survivor of the Battle of Waterloo, he decided to rent the quarry to the municipal administration and began operating it in 1821 as he had promised.
The development of Landelies quarries is accentuated thanks to the expansion of the metallurgical industry in the Charleroi basin.

Its geographical location, along the Sambre, is an additional advantage for the transport of products. Around 1855, Jules FREZON et Cie succeeded Jacques-Aubin Dolbeau as operators of the St-Louis quarry. They built the first grinding mill to meet the ever-increasing demand from glassworks in the region.

In 1874 Mr. WARGNY opened a new quarry located on either side of Chemin du Cerisier.

Les Limestones de la Sambre S.A. were formed when he retired in 1921. Fifty years later, the two operations were merged.
In 2000, a geological study was commissioned to find out what reserves were still available. Following this study and in view of the still large quantities to be extracted, a new grinding installation was built in January 2007.

Today, thanks to the evolution of techniques and a long experience, Limestone of the Sambre produces between 600,000 and 700,000 tons per year, including 300,000 tons of industrial products.
