L'histoire de l'usine remonte au début du XXe siècle, lorsque Joseph Sambron a transformé sa fabrique de bancs d'école en un centre de fabrication de machines agricoles et de bicyclettes. En 1920, l'usine emploie des centaines d'ouvriers et produit des moulins à farine et des pressoirs à cidre. Après la retraite de Joseph, son fils Maurice s'est lancé dans la production de dumpers, petits engins de chantier fabriqués à plus de 50 000 unités, ouvrant ainsi la voie à la construction de l'usine actuelle de Pontchâteau en 1963. La nouvelle usine se spécialise dans la fabrication de bennes et de chariots tout-terrain.
Aujourd'hui, l'usine est réputée pour sa production de chargeurs télescopiques, qui a débuté au début des années 80 sous la marque Sambron, avant d'être acquise par le Groupe Fayat en 1986. Sous la nouvelle direction, Sambron est devenu FDI Sambron et a introduit les télescopiques hydrostatiques. En 2000, FDI Sambron a été rachetée par la société américaine Ingersoll-Rand, qui possédait également la marque Bobcat. FDI Sambron devient alors Bobcat France. En 2007, Bobcat a été acquis par le groupe sud-coréen Doosan et continue d'opérer au sein de la société Doosan Bobcat EMEA.
Trente mille Bobcat-télescopiques
En 2023, l'usine française a franchi une étape impressionnante en fabriquant sa 111.000ème machine et son 40.000ème télescopique, dont 30.000 arborent fièrement le logo Bobcat et les couleurs blanches et orange emblématiques de la marque.
« Notre gamme actuelle de télescopiques se compose de 14 modèles sur cinq plates-formes, avec des marchés clés dans les domaines de l'agriculture, de la construction et de la location. La gestion d'un portefeuille aussi complet n'est possible que grâce à notre équipe d'ingénieurs expérimentés, qui supervisent toutes les activités européennes de développement des chargeurs télescopiques et contribuent également à l'échelle mondiale. Plus de 80 % de notre production est destinée à l'exportation », estime Philippe Marescot, directeur de l'usine de Pontchâteau chez Doosan Bobcat EMEA.
Un grand employeur régional
L'emploi a connu une croissance significative en parallèle de la production. La main-d'œuvre a plus que doublé pour atteindre 420 employés au cours des dix dernières années. La Maire de Pontchâteau, Danielle Cornet, reconnaît l'importance de l'usine en tant qu'employeur majeur de la région, avec plus de 50 % des employés résidant dans un rayon de 20 km, offrant ainsi une variété d'opportunités professionnelles allant de la fabrication aux postes de direction, à l'administration et à la recherche et le développement.

Ces investissements structurels ont renforcé la capacité de notre usine de Pontchâteau à répondre aux demandes du marché et à maintenir une trajectoire de croissance alignée sur les besoins du marché », conclut avec optimisme Philippe Marescot.

“Our current telehandler range consists of 14 models across five platforms, with key markets in agriculture, construction and rental. More than 80% of our production is intended for export,” estimates Philippe Marescot, director of the Pontchâteau plant at Doosan Bobcat EMEA.
A large regional employer
Employment has grown significantly alongside production. The workforce has more than doubled to 420 employees over the past ten years.
