DEVELON SERIES 9: WHEN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE WATCHES OVER SITE SAFETY

360° cameras, intelligent radar, and AI-powered people recognition: with its Series 9 excavators, DEVELON takes accident prevention to the next level, combining team protection, operator confidence, and productivity.

On a construction site, a few seconds of inattention can be enough to cause a tragedy. Between moving machinery, pedestrians, and areas of reduced visibility, operators must constantly anticipate hazards. To meet this major challenge, DEVELON transforms its Series 9 excavators into true intelligent sentinels, capable of detecting people around the machine and, as an option, intervening when the risk of collision becomes critical.

Seeing Beyond Blind Spots

Even the most modern cabs cannot monitor every corner of an excavator. Dust, rain, winter conditions, and unpredictable personnel movements further complicate matters.

“Collisions with pedestrians are generally the most dangerous accidents,” explains Stéphane Dieu, product manager for DEVELON hydraulic excavators in Europe. Given the size and weight of the machines, the consequences can be dramatic, even fatal.

To address this risk, the Smart All-Around View Monitoring system combines six high-definition cameras with artificial intelligence capable of recognizing people. Three radar sensors complement this vision by measuring distances across a 330-degree field of view around the machine.

The operator thus benefits from a broader perception of their surroundings, where mirrors and direct vision reach their limits.

From Alert to Automatic Intervention

The real breakthrough lies in the E-Stop system, offered as an option on Series 9 crawler excavators. Unlike devices that simply display an image or trigger an alarm, this technology can intervene when the risk of collision reaches a critical threshold, stopping the machine according to the conditions defined by the system.

Inspired in particular by advancements in the automotive industry, this approach adds an extra layer of protection when the operator cannot react quickly enough.

The goal is not to replace their judgment, but to provide them with a final safety barrier against the unpredictable.

Safety that Doesn't Slow Down the Work Site

Preventive technology is only valuable if it works effectively under real-world working conditions. Unnecessary alerts or unjustified stops could disrupt production cycles and complicate the daily work of operators.

DEVELON therefore tested its E-Stop system with companies and operators in France. Feedback highlighted a key element: when the system operates discreetly in the background, the operator can continue working normally, knowing that assistance is available in case of danger.

This increased confidence helps maintain concentration and limit unnecessary interruptions. External audible warnings can also raise awareness among those near the machine.

Protecting people, preserving profitability

Beyond the human imperative, accident prevention also represents a major economic issue. A serious incident can lead to a worksite shutdown, material damage, investigations, and increased insurance costs.

Conversely, a rigorous safety policy can strengthen companies' credibility with their clients and facilitate access to certain markets.

For large construction companies and rental firms, the gradual integration of collision avoidance systems into their fleets could therefore become a real operational advantage.

Towards a new standard on construction sites?

DEVELON has already integrated its Smart All-Around View Monitoring system with people recognition as standard equipment on its Series 9 excavators. The E-Stop system, which requires additional radar and software, remains available as an option.

According to Stéphane Dieu, collision avoidance systems could become a common requirement within the next five to ten years, similar to other technologies now in demand on modern construction sites.

The widespread adoption of these solutions will depend in particular on their cost, reliability, and acceptance by professionals.

With the Series 9, DEVELON champions a vision where technology no longer simply improves machine performance; it actively contributes to protecting those working around it. Because on the construction sites of tomorrow, productivity will be measured not only in tons moved or hours saved, but also in accidents avoided and lives saved.

Mensen beschermen, winstgevendheid behouden
