Underground Coal Mines: AFEX Achieves MSHA Certification for its Fire Suppression System

In the narrow tunnels of a coal mine, a fire can quickly escalate into a critical situation. Between the presence of methane, flammable coal dust, and the challenges of firefighting operations, the safety of operators and heavy machinery is paramount.

To address these risks, AFEX Fire Suppression Systems has just obtained MSHA certification for its new fire suppression system designed for mobile equipment operating in underground American coal mines.

Protection Adapted to Explosive Atmospheres
The unique feature of this system lies in its design for environments where even the smallest spark can ignite.

It combines intrinsically safe electrical circuits, minimizing the risk of ignition, with an explosion-proof triggering mechanism equipped with a specific MSHA-certified electrical actuator.

Technology Developed for Mining Equipment
AFEX has notably developed an MP control unit, integrating a detection circuit and a triggering circuit. The system was designed to meet the specific requirements of equipment used in underground environments.

This solution aims to protect both operators and machinery in environments where difficult access and confined spaces significantly complicate fire response.

Five years of development and testing
This certification is the culmination of five years of design, technical improvements, and testing. The triggering mechanism was evaluated in a methane atmosphere to verify that it does not cause ignition under the test conditions.

Now certified and available through the AFEX network of authorized distributors, the system offers mining operators a new fire protection solution adapted to the particularly harsh constraints of underground mines.

Deep in mines, where every intervention can become critical, fire prevention remains a top priority.
