As November 11th, Armistice Day, approaches, solidarity sometimes takes unexpected forms. At JCB, a small excavator transformed into a commemorative badge has raised £12,500 for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, an organization that supports British veterans and their families.
The initiative was spearheaded by Kelvin Chell, a former firefighter from Staffordshire with a passion for creating poppy-shaped badges. To mark JCB's 80th anniversary, he designed an original model depicting one of the brand's backhoe loaders. JCB and its supplier, Rayne Engineering, immediately supported the project by funding its production.
2,400 badges sold in just a few days
Offered to employees at JCB's 11 UK production sites, the first 2,400 badges sold out in just a few days. Sales then continued in local shops and online, with orders coming from the US, Canada, Ireland, and even the Orkney Islands.
Sales generated over £11,400, an amount that JCB supplemented to reach a total of £12,500.
Over £150,000 raised in six years
For Kelvin Chell, this initiative represents another milestone in his remarkable commitment. In six years, his various commemorative badge designs have enabled him to raise over £150,000 for the Royal British Legion. He has already created 39 different designs, including those representing Staffordshire heritage, Spitfire aircraft, and regional symbols.
The official check presentation took place at JCB's global headquarters in Rocester, in the presence of representatives from the company and the charity.
A commitment that extends beyond the industrial world. JCB is thus reaffirming its commitment to the British Armed Forces and veterans, many of whom work within the company. This initiative is part of a long tradition of support, notably following the auction of a special machine decorated with poppies in 2018.
A heartwarming story where an iconic JCB machine becomes a symbol of genuine solidarity: behind every badge sold, a concrete gesture for those who have served their country.

2.400 badges in slechts enkele dagen verkocht
