PONTE VALNIT: A spectacular construction site at the foot of the Gotthard Pass, where every meter of concrete is a challenge!

In the heart of the Swiss Alps, near Airolo, the new Ponte Valnit bridge is taking shape in a particularly demanding environment. Designed to reorganize access to the second Gotthard road tunnel, this project requires construction teams to contend with complex geometry, significant loads, and extremely limited working space.
To meet this challenge, PERI developed a customized combination of VARIOKIT formwork, VST high-capacity shoring towers, and MULTIPROP systems.
Complex geometry in a constrained environment
The bridge features curved, inclined sections of varying widths, with cantilevers over the water. Limited crane access and reduced storage space further complicate operations.
The work was organized into two zones, north and south, with the side spans being constructed progressively. The formwork was also adapted to create exposed concrete surfaces with a wood-look finish.
PERI: Reusable technical solutions
VARIOKIT VST Heavy-Duty shoring towers and MULTIPROP props ensure the transfer of heavy loads. A unique feature of this project: the towers are reused between different phases, thus reducing equipment requirements and improving site efficiency.
The modular VARIOKIT system also allows for the rapid adaptation of formwork to different geometries, while controlling construction costs.
A cantilever over a water reservoir
The next step will be particularly challenging: constructing the central section between the two main piers.
Located above an operational water reservoir, this section cannot receive any temporary support from the bottom in order to maintain its watertightness.
PERI therefore plans to use its VARIOKIT VBC Balanced Cantilever Carriage system, which allows this section of the bridge to be built in a cantilever fashion, without intermediate supports.
The Ponte Valnit perfectly illustrates the importance of modern engineering, logistics, and formwork systems in major Alpine infrastructure projects. At the foot of the Gotthard Pass, technical precision is as essential as the sheer power of the resources deployed.

PERI: Herbruikbare technische oplossingen
