Amazon: Four Liebherr Cranes at the Rainforest Top to Unlock Climate Secrets

Amazon 3Amazon 4 765x510Amazon 6 765x510Image-For one of the world’s most consequential climate research programmes, four Liebherr 85 EC-B tower cranes are enabling scientists to study the Amazon rainforest from above the canopy.-The four Liebherr 85 EC-B 5 tower cranes were chosen precisely because they can withstand the extremes of heat and humidity and not disturb the habitat,’ says Bruna Prisco, application engineer at Liebherr in Brazil-Civil engineer Maria Juliana Monte atop the AmazonFACE infrastructure near Manaus — born and raised in the Amazon, she now studies the rainforest she grew up in as a global climate regulator.

More than 45 meters above the ground, in the heart of the Amazon rainforest canopy, four tower cranes are working in an environment for which they were never originally designed: scientific research. Near Manaus, Brazil, the Liebherr 85 EC-B cranes allow researchers to access the forest without destroying the ecosystem they are studying.

A spectacular use of construction equipment serving a global challenge: understanding how the Amazon will react to increased CO₂ in the atmosphere.

Cranes rather than walkways
The AmazonFACE program is a world first: studying on a large scale the effects of increased CO₂ concentration on a mature rainforest.

Why choose tower cranes? Their small footprint limits soil compaction, root damage, and disturbance to vegetation. Their horizontal reach also allows them to cover vast areas without requiring multiple permanent installations.

The four cranes transport researchers and instruments above the canopy to measure CO₂, plant physiology, microclimate, and biodiversity.

Liebherr 85 EC-B: Precision and Capacity
Designed to work in confined spaces, the 85 EC-B cranes have a boom reach of up to 50 meters and a maximum lifting capacity of 5 tons.

Their flat-top design facilitates the operation of multiple cranes in overlapping reach areas. Variable frequency drives ensure smooth movements, essential for the gentle transport of sensors and scientific instruments.

Another key requirement: withstanding the extreme heat and humidity of the Amazon rainforest. Two machines were manufactured in Brazil and two in Spain.

Essential Technical Support
In a remote forest area, a breakdown can quickly compromise operations. Liebherr-Brasil therefore provides operator training, maintenance advice, spare parts supply, and technical support.

This demonstrates that, at remote sites, machine availability depends as much on the quality of after-sales service as on their performance.

The Amazon: A Laboratory for Understanding Climate
The Amazon is estimated to contain between 150 and 200 billion tons of carbon in its vegetation and soils. Yet, scientists are still trying to understand how this immense reserve will react to increased CO₂, droughts, and global warming.

The results of AmazonFACE should contribute to improving climate models and forest protection policies.

Four Liebherr cranes, initially designed for construction sites, are thus becoming essential tools for environmental research. This is a prime example of the versatility of construction equipment, now capable of contributing to a better understanding and preservation of one of our planet's greatest natural resources.
