Imagine a farm the size of a small town, where nearly 300 machines are in operation during harvest time. Tractors, sugarcane harvesters, and trucks travel daily on dozens of kilometers of tracks. But when tropical rains hit the region, these roads quickly become a logistical nightmare.
In Brazil, Usina Alta Mogiana decided to tackle the problem head-on: rather than continuing to repair its tracks or hiring a specialized company, this major agribusiness chose to invest in its own road construction equipment. Its goal: to transform nearly 60 kilometers of internal roads into paved roads, reduce transportation costs, and sustainably manage its road network.
60 Kilometers of Roads to Free Up Logistics
Located in São Joaquim da Barra, in the northern part of São Paulo state, Usina Alta Mogiana produces more than 10 million bags of granulated sugar and hundreds of millions of liters of bioethanol each year.
On this vast operation, gravel roads are a crucial link in the production chain. But during the rainy season, heavy rainfall softens the soil, causes erosion, and significantly complicates the transport of sugarcane to the factory.
The result: constant maintenance, costly repairs, accelerated wear and tear on trucks, and slower transport schedules.
Management has therefore decided to radically change its strategy by paving its internal road network.
Vögele SUPER 1400: Precision at the Service of the Construction Site
To carry out this project, the company selected a Vögele SUPER 1400 tracked paver, coupled with a Hamm HD 90 K roller compactor.
Compact, robust, and exceptionally maneuverable, the SUPER 1400 is ideally suited to the demands of agricultural roads. It is equipped with an AB 480 extendable screed featuring tamping and vibration systems, allowing it to work on widths ranging from 2.55 to 4.80 meters, or even up to 6.30 meters with additional extensions.
Its paving capacity of up to 600 tons of asphalt per hour is a significant advantage for taking advantage of short periods of dry weather.
The project includes two four-meter-wide slabs, with a 5 cm binder course and a 3 cm surface course, over the entire 60-kilometer stretch.
Even in tropical temperatures, the machine's cooling system ensures continuous operation.
Farmers become road builders.
The originality of this project also lies in its organization. Usina Alta Mogiana didn't simply purchase machines; it decided to train its own employees to carry out the work.
The Wirtgen Group and Terraverde Máquinas, regional distributor of John Deere and Wirtgen Group equipment, supported the company in this endeavor.
The program included a cost-benefit analysis, trials, technical assistance, and several days of training for future operators.
The SUPER 1400 is easy to learn thanks to Vögele's ErgoBasic control system. Its intuitive interface, clearly identified symbols, and ergonomic controls allow operators, even those with little experience in road work, to quickly learn the machine's main functions.
Behind the paver, the Hamm HD 90 K compacts the freshly laid asphalt, ensuring the quality and consistency of the road surface.
Up to 7 million reais saved each year!
The investment is beginning to show its full economic value. Paving the network should significantly reduce road maintenance and limit wear and tear on the transport fleet.
Savings from eliminating maintenance and repair work alone could reach 7 million Brazilian reais per year, or approximately 1.2 million euros.
Transport times between the fields and the plant will also be reduced, with a target of lowering logistics costs by up to 25%.
And the company now has its own machines and trained staff to continue, adapt, or expand its road network as needed. A farm that adopts the methods of road construction professionals
With this initiative, Usina Alta Mogiana demonstrates that public works technologies can provide concrete solutions to the challenges of large-scale industrial agriculture.
Vögele and Hamm aren't building a highway here, but a strategic tool for agricultural production. Sixty kilometers of asphalt will allow trucks to circulate more efficiently, crops to arrive at the factory more quickly, and the company to sustainably reduce its expenses.
A perfect illustration of the convergence between agriculture, civil engineering, and mechanization: when a farm decides to become its own road builder!
