Hommage à un grand homme de la manutention

C’est avec une profonde émotion et une immense tristesse que Manitou Group annonce le décès de Monsieur Marcel Braud, Président d’honneur et fondateur de Manitou, survenu le mardi 3 février 2026, à l’âge de 93 ans.

Visionnaire passionné par l’innovation, l’industrie, les produits et le réseau de concessionnaires du groupe qu’il a dirigé jusqu’en 2017, Marcel Braud a su transformer une entreprise familiale en une référence mondiale dans les domaines de la manutention, de l’élévation de personnes et du terrassement. Son empreinte marque durablement l’histoire industrielle française et internationale.

L’histoire de Marcel Braud est celle d’un destin forgé par le travail, l’ingéniosité et la ténacité. Orphelin de père à l’âge de 13 ans, il rejoint, à la sortie de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, l’entreprise familiale Braud Mécanique Générale, à la demande et aux côtés de sa mère, Andrée Braud. D’abord manœuvre, puis peintre, soudeur, monteur et contremaître, il apprend et exerce avec humilité l’ensemble des métiers de la production.

En 1958, animé par une intuition audacieuse, il imagine une innovation révolutionnaire : inverser l’architecture d’un tracteur agricole pour y intégrer un mât de levage et une direction assistée. Le Manitou était né. Cette idée visionnaire allait profondément transformer les chantiers, les exploitations agricoles et l’industrie à travers le monde.

Marcel Braud occupe ensuite successivement les fonctions de Chef d’atelier et de Responsable des achats, avant d’être nommé Président-directeur général en 1970, puis Président du Conseil d’administration de 2007 à 2017.

Sous son impulsion déterminante, le groupe franchit les frontières françaises, s’impose sur les marchés internationaux, entre en Bourse et poursuit une dynamique d’innovation constante. Il bâtit également un réseau de concessionnaires solide et fidèle, pilier fondamental de la réussite du groupe. Homme de terrain infatigable, il continuait encore en ce début d’année 2026 à se rendre dans les usines et sur les salons internationaux, animé par le désir constant de rester au plus près des clients et des collaborateurs. Jusqu’à son dernier souffle, il incarne la passion, la résilience et l’esprit d’entreprise qui constituent l’âme de Manitou Group.

Jacqueline Himsworth, Présidente du Conseil d’administration de Manitou Group, témoigne :

« Mon frère a dédié sa vie à Manitou Group. Grâce à lui, notre petite entreprise familiale est devenue un leader international, reconnu pour ses produits, ses valeurs et sa capacité d’innovation. Passionné et inspirant, il savait transmettre à chacun l’énergie et la fierté d’appartenir au groupe. Doté d’un rare génie d’anticipation des besoins des professionnels, il restera pour nous un guide. Si nous perdons un homme, son esprit d’entreprendre demeure notre boussole. Marcel-Claude Braud, Sébastien Braud et Émilie Braud, administrateurs de Manitou Group, se joignent à moi pour exprimer notre immense peine. »

« Marcel Braud était un homme et un entrepreneur d’exception. Par son engagement, sa persévérance et sa vision, il a profondément marqué le quotidien de millions de professionnels de la construction, de l’agriculture et de l’industrie à travers le monde.  It is with deep emotion and profound sadness that Manitou Group announces the passing of Mr. Marcel Braud, Honorary Chairman and Founder of Manitou, who passed away on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at the age of 93.

A visionary deeply passionate about innovation, industry, the Group’s products, and its dealer network—whom he led until 2017—Marcel Braud transformed a family-owned business into a global leader in material handling, access platforms, and earthmoving solutions. His legacy has left an enduring mark on French and international industry alike.

Marcel Braud’s life story is one of ingenuity, hard work, and resilience. Orphaned of his father at the age of 13, he joined the family company, Braud General Mechanics, alongside his mother, Andrée Braud, in the aftermath of the Second World War. Beginning as a laborer, then working successively as a painter, welder, assembler, and foreman, he learned every facet of the manufacturing trades with humility and determination.

In 1958, driven by an audacious intuition, he envisioned a revolutionary concept: reversing the architecture of an agricultural tractor and equipping it with a lifting mast and power steering. The Manitou was born. This simple yet groundbreaking idea would go on to transform construction sites, agricultural operations, and industrial environments across the world.

Marcel Braud later held several key positions within the company, including Workshop Manager and Head of Purchasing, before being appointed Chief Executive Officer in 1970, and subsequently Chairman of the Board from 2007 to 2017.

Under his decisive leadership, the Group expanded beyond France’s borders to establish a strong international presence, went public, and pursued continuous innovation. He also built a robust and loyal dealer network, which remains a cornerstone of the Group’s strength today. A tireless man of the field, he continued, even into early 2026, to visit Group plants and attend trade shows around the world, driven by an unwavering desire to remain close to customers and employees. Until his final days, he embodied the passion, entrepreneurial spirit, and resilience that define the soul of Manitou Group.

“My brother dedicated his life to Manitou Group. Thanks to him, our small family business became an international leader, recognized for its products, values, and spirit of innovation. He was a true enthusiast who inspired pride and energy in everyone around him. He possessed the rare genius of anticipating the needs of professionals. While we lose a guiding figure, his entrepreneurial spirit remains our compass. Marcel-Claude Braud, Sébastien Braud, and Émilie Braud, members of the Board of Directors, join me in expressing our deepest sorrow.”
