Komatsu and AIM – When Artificial Intelligence Redefines Tomorrow's Construction Sites

Komatsu is opening a new chapter in autonomy. After revolutionizing the mining industry with over 1,000 autonomous dump trucks in operation and 11.5 billion tons transported without a driver since 2008, the Japanese manufacturer is now tackling its most complex challenge: earthmoving projects.
To achieve this, Komatsu and its subsidiary EARTHBRAIN are partnering with AIM Intelligent Machines, a young American company specializing in physical artificial intelligence. Together, they are combining the Smart Construction platform with AIM's algorithms so that bulldozers and excavators can analyze terrain, define their own work strategy, and execute operations completely autonomously.
One of the major advantages of this technology lies in its ability to equip existing machines, regardless of their brand or age. Companies can thus gradually transform their fleets without waiting for equipment replacement, accelerating the adoption of autonomous systems on construction sites.
Already deployed at several customer sites in the United States, the solution will arrive on the Japanese market starting in 2027. This positions Komatsu at the heart of a competitive landscape where software, data, and artificial intelligence are becoming as strategic as the machines themselves, facing innovative players such as Bedrock Robotics, Built Robotics, and Gravis Robotics.
Beyond performance, this development addresses two major challenges in the sector: the global shortage of skilled operators and the need to improve safety on construction sites. The goal is no longer simply to automate a machine, but to create a construction site capable of organizing itself, optimizing its movements, and producing more with the same resources.
With this partnership, Komatsu confirms that the future of earthmoving will no longer depend solely on the power of steel, but on the intelligence that guides every movement of the machine. NJC© Info KOMATSU

Representative image of a Komatsu hydraulic excavator and dozer. Equipment shown is for illustrative purposes only and does not depict machines that have been retrofitted.
NJC© Info KOMATSU
