Rail: Magnetic Textile That Defys Heat

What if rails could withstand heat waves without water, electricity, or permanent modifications?
In South Korea, the Korea Railroad Research Institute (KRRI) has developed a multi-layered thermal textile, magnetically attached to the rail, capable of reducing its temperature by up to 10.9°C, according to the demonstration program.
Its secret: a highly reflective surface that blocks a large portion of solar radiation before it transforms the steel into a veritable heat accumulator.
Tested on conventional and high-speed lines, including with KTX trains traveling at 300 km/h, the system combines thermal protection with mechanized deployment. A specially designed machine can lay and then retrieve the textile at speeds exceeding 2 km/h.
The benefits extend beyond simple thermal performance. By limiting rail heating, this technology could help reduce the thermal stresses on continuous welded rail and, in some situations, the need for speed restrictions related to extreme heat.
After several years of research and testing, KRRI transferred the technology to PITCHCABLE Co., Ltd. for commercialization.
A thin magnetic membrane, a few degrees cooler… and perhaps a new weapon against the overheated railway tracks of tomorrow's summers.
