À Hawkesville, en Ontario, AMI Attachments a récemment ouvert les portes de son siège social et de son usine de fabrication à trois véritables icônes du secteur de la construction. Un moment unique, marqué par la rencontre de plusieurs générations, où passé et présent se sont rejoints autour d’une passion commune : les équipements lourds et l’innovation.

Parmi les invités d’honneur, on retrouvait Russel Cox, 100 ans, fondateur de Cox Construction en 1947 à Guelph, Bev Dekay, 94 ans, qui a lancé Dekay Construction à London il y a 71 ans, ainsi que Don Benson, 93 ans, figure emblématique du marketing d’équipements lourds en Ontario, avec une carrière de plus d’un demi-siècle. Ensemble, ces trois hommes incarnent plus de 200 ans d’expérience dans l’industrie.

« C’était une évidence d’organiser cette visite. Nous sommes simplement honorés d’accueillir ces messieurs ici », a déclaré Bernie Howorth, vice-président du développement des marchés chez AMI Attachments.

L’idée est née lors du concours Toromont Cat Operator Challenge plus tôt cet été, quand Howorth a croisé Russel Cox et son fils Regan, ainsi que John, le fils de Bev Dekay. De fil en aiguille, l’invitation a pris forme, et les Dekay ont suggéré d’inclure leur ami de longue date, Don Benson. « J’ai connu ces hommes tout au long de ma carrière, comme concessionnaire puis comme fabricant. Les réunir ici était une manière de célébrer leur parcours et leur contribution à notre industrie », a confié Howorth.

Une entreprise enracinée dans l’innovation

Fondée en 2001 par Steve Frey, AMI Attachments (Agway Manufacturing Inc.) a démarré modestement avec la fabrication d’un premier godet pour une pelle rétro Case 580 destinée à un fermier de la région. Vingt ans plus tard, ce godet « numéro un » a été retrouvé et trône désormais dans la salle du conseil, comme symbole des débuts de l’entreprise.

Depuis, AMI s’est imposé comme un fournisseur international d’attaches pour excavatrices, rétrocaveuses, chargeuses sur roues et autres équipements lourds. Avec près de 180 employés et une usine ultramoderne de 100 000 pieds carrés, l’entreprise est également devenue la première au monde à être doublement certifiée dans les programmes Hardox In My Body et My Inner Strenx de SSAB, gage de qualité et de robustesse.

Un regard d’experts sur l’avenir

Lors de la visite, les vétérans ont pu découvrir chaque étape de la production – du soudage à la peinture – ainsi que les dernières innovations en conception d’attaches. Leurs réactions traduisaient autant d’émerveillement que de nostalgie.

« C’était fascinant, et très gratifiant de voir jusqu’où l’industrie est allée », a confié Russel Cox.
« Absolument incroyable de constater l’innovation et le rythme de production », a ajouté Bev Dekay.
Quant à Don Benson, il a souligné les profondes transformations du secteur : « Il y a eu énormément de changements dans les procédés de fabrication. »

Pour AMI Attachments, accueillir ces figures historiques représentait bien plus qu’une simple visite : c’était une occasion de rendre hommage à ceux qui ont façonné l’industrie, tout en démontrant comment l’innovation continue de redéfinir le futur des équipements de construction.

Industry Legends Visit AMI Attachments

In Hawkesville, Ontario, AMI Attachments recently opened the doors of its headquarters and manufacturing plant to three true icons of the construction industry. A unique moment marked by the coming together of several generations, where past and present came together around a shared passion: heavy equipment and innovation.

Among the guests of honor were Russel Cox, 100, founder of Cox Construction in 1947 in Guelph; Bev Dekay, 94, who launched Dekay Construction in London 71 years ago; and Don Benson, 93, an iconic figure in heavy equipment marketing in Ontario with a career spanning over half a century. Together, these three men represent over 200 years of experience in the industry.

"It was a no-brainer to organize this visit. “We are simply honored to welcome these gentlemen here,” said Bernie Howorth, Vice President of Market Development at AMI Attachments.

The idea was born during the Toromont Cat Operator Challenge earlier this summer, when Howorth ran into Russel Cox and his son Regan, as well as Bev Dekay’s son John. One thing led to another, and the Dekays suggested including their longtime friend, Don Benson. “I’ve known these men throughout my career, as a dealer and then as a manufacturer. Bringing them together here was a way to celebrate their journey and their contribution to our industry,” said Howorth.

A Company Rooted in Innovation

Founded in 2001 by Steve Frey, AMI Attachments (Agway Manufacturing Inc.) started out small with the manufacture of a first bucket for a Case 580 backhoe for a local farmer. Twenty years later, that "number one" bucket was found and now sits in the boardroom as a symbol of the company's beginnings.

Since then, AMI has established itself as an international supplier of fasteners for excavators, backhoes, wheel loaders, and other heavy equipment. With nearly 180 employees and a 100,000-square-foot state-of-the-art factory, the company also became the first in the world to be dual-certified in SSAB's Hardox In My Body and My Inner Strenx programs, a guarantee of quality and robustness.

An Expert Look into the Future

During the tour, the veterans were able to see every step of production—from welding to painting—as well as the latest innovations in fastener design. Their reactions expressed both wonder and nostalgia.

"It was fascinating, and very rewarding to see how far the industry has come," said Russel Cox. "It's absolutely incredible to see the innovation and the pace of production," added Bev Dekay.
Don Benson highlighted the profound transformations in the industry: "There have been enormous changes in manufacturing processes."

For AMI Attachments, welcoming these historic figures represented more than just a visit: it was an opportunity to pay tribute to those who shaped the industry, while demonstrating how innovation continues to redefine the future of construction equipment.

In Hawkesville, Ontario, opende AMI Attachments onlangs de deuren van haar hoofdkantoor en productielocatie voor drie ware iconen uit de bouwsector. Een uniek moment, gekenmerkt door de samenkomst van verschillende generaties, waarbij heden en verleden samenkwamen rond een gedeelde passie: zwaar materieel en innovatie.

Onder de eregasten bevonden zich Russel Cox (100), oprichter van Cox Construction in 1947 in Guelph; Bev Dekay (94), die 71 jaar geleden Dekay Construction in Londen oprichtte; en Don Benson (93), een iconische figuur in de marketing van zwaar materieel in Ontario met een carrière van meer dan een halve eeuw. Samen vertegenwoordigen deze drie mannen meer dan 200 jaar ervaring in de sector.

"Het was een no-brainer om dit bezoek te organiseren. "We zijn gewoon vereerd deze heren hier te mogen verwelkomen", aldus Bernie Howorth, Vice President Market Development bij AMI Attachments.

Door ze hier samen te brengen, konden we hun reis en hun bijdrage aan onze sector vieren", aldus Howorth.

Een bedrijf geworteld in innovatie

AMI Attachments (Agway Manufacturing Inc.), opgericht in 2001 door Steve Frey, begon klein met de productie van een eerste bak voor een Case 580-graaflaadcombinatie voor een lokale boer. Twintig jaar later werd die "nummer één" bak gevonden en staat nu in de bestuurskamer als symbool van de beginjaren van het bedrijf.

Sindsdien heeft AMI zich gevestigd als een internationale leverancier van bevestigingsmiddelen voor graafmachines, graaflaadcombinaties, wielladers en ander zwaar materieel. Met bijna 180 medewerkers en een ultramoderne fabriek van 9300 vierkante meter was het bedrijf ook het eerste ter wereld dat dubbel gecertificeerd was voor de programma's Hardox In My Body en My Inner Strenx van SSAB, een garantie voor kwaliteit en robuustheid.

Een blik van een expert op de toekomst

Tijdens de rondleiding konden de veteranen elke stap van productie – van lassen tot verven – en de nieuwste innovaties op het gebied van bevestigingsontwerp. Hun reacties getuigden van zowel verwondering als nostalgie.

"Het was fascinerend en zeer de moeite waard om te zien hoe ver de industrie is gekomen", aldus Russel Cox. "Het is absoluut ongelooflijk om de innovatie en het productietempo te zien", voegde Bev Dekay eraan toe.
Don Benson benadrukte de ingrijpende transformaties in de industrie: "Er hebben enorme veranderingen plaatsgevonden in de productieprocessen."

Voor AMI Attachments was het verwelkomen van deze historische figuren meer dan alleen een bezoek: het was een gelegenheid om hulde te brengen aan degenen die de industrie hebben gevormd, en tegelijkertijd te laten zien hoe innovatie de toekomst van bouwmachines blijft herdefiniëren.
