USA Vermont : le réaménagement de l’échangeur 17 de l’I-89 entre dans sa phase finale

Le Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) approche de l’achèvement du vaste projet de modernisation de l’Exit 17 de l’Interstate 89 à Colchester. Doté d’un budget de 31,7 millions de dollars et financé par la Federal Highway Administration, le chantier devrait être livré début juillet 2026.

L’opération vise à améliorer la sécurité et la fluidité du trafic à l’un des principaux carrefours routiers du nord du Vermont, emprunté quotidiennement par près de 16 000 véhicules.

Au cœur du projet figure le remplacement complet du pont de l’U.S. Route 2 franchissant l’I-89, une infrastructure datant de 1964 et arrivée en fin de cycle. Le nouvel ouvrage à quatre voies, conçu pour une durée de vie estimée à 75 ans, s’accompagne d’une reconfiguration complète des bretelles d’accès et de sortie de l’autoroute.

Les travaux ont également permis l’allongement des voies de décélération, la création de nouvelles voies de tourne-à-gauche, l’élargissement de plusieurs sections de chaussée ainsi que l’aménagement de bandes cyclables. L’objectif est de réduire les points de conflit, limiter les files d’attente aux heures de pointe et améliorer les déplacements entre l’I-89, l’U.S. 2 et l’U.S. 7.

Confié à l’entreprise Kubricky-Jointa Lime LLC, le chantier a été mené en six phases entre 2024 et 2026. Parmi les réalisations majeures figurent la construction du nouveau pont de 62 mètres de portée, la reconstruction des bretelles d’échangeur, l’installation de nouveaux feux de signalisation et le réalignement de plusieurs tronçons routiers.

Malgré la complexité des travaux réalisés sous circulation, les équipes ont réussi à maintenir le calendrier grâce à une coordination étroite entre le maître d’ouvrage, les entreprises et les nombreux sous-traitants mobilisés. Jusqu’à 30 ouvriers ont travaillé simultanément sur le chantier, de jour comme de nuit.

Les dernières interventions en cours concernent principalement la signalisation définitive, l’éclairage, les réglages des feux tricolores ainsi que les travaux de finition et de remise en état des abords.

À terme, ce nouvel échangeur doit offrir une circulation plus fluide, une meilleure sécurité pour les automobilistes et les cyclistes, tout en renforçant les connexions stratégiques entre le réseau autoroutier et les principaux axes régionaux du comté de Chittenden.

The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) is nearing completion of the extensive modernization project for Interstate 89 Exit 17 in Colchester. With a budget of $31.7 million and funding from the Federal Highway Administration, the project is expected to be completed in early July 2026.

The project aims to improve safety and traffic flow at one of northern Vermont's major highway interchanges, used daily by nearly 16,000 vehicles.

At the heart of the project is the complete replacement of the U.S. Route 2 bridge over I-89, an infrastructure dating back to 1964 that has reached the end of its lifespan. The new four-lane structure, designed for an estimated lifespan of 75 years, includes a complete reconfiguration of the highway's on- and off-ramps.

The work also included lengthening deceleration lanes, creating new left-turn lanes, widening several roadway sections, and adding bike lanes. The goal is to reduce conflict points, limit traffic congestion during peak hours, and improve travel between I-89, U.S. 2, and U.S. 7.

Awarded to Kubricky-Jointa Lime LLC, the project was carried out in six phases between 2024 and 2026. Major achievements include the construction of the new 62-meter span bridge, the reconstruction of interchange ramps, the installation of new traffic lights, and the realignment of several road sections.

Despite the complexity of the work being done while traffic flowed, the teams managed to stay on schedule thanks to close coordination between the project owner, the contractors, and the numerous subcontractors involved. Up to 30 workers were on site simultaneously, day and night.

The final stages of work currently underway mainly involve the installation of permanent signage, lighting, traffic light adjustments, and finishing touches and landscaping of the surrounding area.

Ultimately, this new interchange is expected to provide smoother traffic flow, improved safety for motorists and cyclists, and strengthen strategic connections between the motorway network and the main regional roads in Chittenden County.

Het Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) nadert de voltooiing van het omvangrijke moderniseringsproject voor afrit 17 van de Interstate 89 in Colchester. Met een budget van $ 31,7 miljoen en financiering van de Federal Highway Administration zal het project naar verwachting begin juli 2026 worden afgerond.

Het project is gericht op het verbeteren van de veiligheid en de doorstroming van het verkeer op een van de belangrijkste snelwegknooppunten in Noord-Vermont, waar dagelijks bijna 16.000 voertuigen gebruik van maken.

Centraal in het project staat de volledige vervanging van de brug van U.S. Route 2 over de I-89, een infrastructuur die dateert uit 1964 en het einde van haar levensduur heeft bereikt. De nieuwe vierbaansbrug, ontworpen voor een geschatte levensduur van 75 jaar, omvat een complete herinrichting van de op- en afritten van de snelweg.

Het project, dat werd toegekend aan Kubricky-Jointa Lime LLC, werd in zes fasen uitgevoerd tussen 2024 en 2026. Belangrijke resultaten zijn onder meer de bouw van de nieuwe brug met een overspanning van 62 meter, de reconstructie van de afritten, de installatie van nieuwe verkeerslichten en de herinrichting van diverse weggedeelten.

Ondanks de complexiteit van de werkzaamheden, die plaatsvonden terwijl het verkeer bleef doorstromen, slaagden de teams erin om de planning te halen dankzij de nauwe coördinatie tussen de opdrachtgever, de aannemers en de vele betrokken onderaannemers. Er waren tot wel 30 werknemers tegelijk op de bouwplaats, dag en nacht.

De laatste fase van de werkzaamheden omvat momenteel voornamelijk de installatie van permanente bewegwijzering, verlichting, afstelling van verkeerslichten en de afwerking en landschapsinrichting van de omgeving.

Uiteindelijk zal dit nieuwe knooppunt naar verwachting zorgen voor een vlottere verkeersdoorstroming, verbeterde veiligheid voor automobilisten en fietsers, en een versterking van de strategische verbindingen tussen het snelwegennet en de belangrijkste regionale wegen in Chittenden County.
