WOLFF Crane Above the Void: Two Giant Cranes Challenge the Sill Gorge

In the heart of the Austrian Alps, two WOLFF cranes are tackling a construction site where every lift demands absolute precision. On the A13 Brenner motorway, south of Innsbruck, the demolition and reconstruction of the Sill Bridge requires two spreader jib cranes, positioned on either side of a vertiginous gorge.
The BODNER Group selected a WOLFF 8060.25 Cross, equipped with an 80-meter jib and capable of lifting up to 25 tons, and a WOLFF 8038.20 Clear, with a 70-meter jib and a 20-ton capacity. For approximately three years, they will transport the formwork, concrete, machinery, and equipment necessary for the reconstruction.
But before the first lift, a considerable logistical challenge had to be overcome. Assembling the largest crane required a 450-tonne mobile crane. The foundation anchors were installed 14 meters down the slope, approximately 20 meters below the bridge abutment. The steep terrain, high-voltage power lines, and proximity to Innsbruck Airport necessitated meticulous planning and specific safety measures.
Beyond their lifting capacities, these two machines illustrate the importance of engineering and coordination on major Alpine construction projects. Their mission: to enable the bridge reconstruction while maintaining traffic flow on this strategic route connecting Austria and Italy.
For BODNER, this is also a first: the company is integrating WOLFF spreader jib cranes into its fleet for the first time, relying on Wolffkran's technical support from planning to assembly.
Scheduled for completion at the end of 2028: in the Sill Gorge, the performance of the cranes is measured as much by their power as by the precision with which they work high above the void, serving an infrastructure essential to European traffic.
