Un nouveau chapitre s’ouvre dans le développement du cuivre en Afrique australe. Le géant chinois JCHX Mining Management Co Ltd, l’un des leaders mondiaux des services miniers, a choisi Sandvik Mining pour lui fournir une flotte souterraine de 32 engins de pointe, destinés à soutenir les opérations du Khoemacau Copper Mine (KCM) au Botswana.

L’accord, enregistré au troisième trimestre 2025, comprend un impressionnant arsenal technologique : 12 camions Toro® TH663i, 10 chargeuses Toro LH621i, 8 foreuses de développement Sandvik DD422i, 1 foreuse longue trous Sandvik DL432i et 1 Sandvik Rhino 100 raise borer. Ce contrat va bien au-delà de la simple livraison de machines : il inclut également un service de Remote Monitoring, permettant de suivre en temps réel les performances de la flotte et d’optimiser son efficacité. Les premières livraisons débuteront au troisième trimestre 2025 et se poursuivront jusqu’au deuxième trimestre 2026.

Khoemacau : un joyau du Kalahari Copper Belt

Nichée au cœur du Kalahari Copper Belt, la mine de Khoemacau est déjà un site souterrain majeur et connaît actuellement une phase d’expansion accélérée. Depuis son acquisition en mars 2024, l’opérateur MMG a mis en place une stratégie ambitieuse : porter la production annuelle de cuivre à 60 000 tonnes d’ici deux ans. Cette croissance sera rendue possible grâce à l’usine de traitement existante de 3,65 Mt/an, et à une meilleure accessibilité aux zones à plus forte teneur.

Mais l’horizon est encore plus vaste. À long terme, MMG projette de plus que doubler cette capacité, visant une production de 130 000 tonnes de cuivre en concentré par an. Pour y parvenir, un nouveau complexe de traitement de 4,5 Mt/an sera construit, accompagné du développement de nouvelles zones d’exploitation et de gisements voisins. Les premiers travaux préparatoires sont déjà en cours, le chantier principal étant prévu pour 2026, avec une première production de concentré attendue dès 2028.

A new chapter in copper development in Southern Africa is opening. Chinese giant JCHX Mining Management Co Ltd, a global leader in mining services, has selected Sandvik Mining to supply an underground fleet of 32 state-of-the-art rigs to support operations at the Khoemacau Copper Mine (KCM) in Botswana.

The agreement, registered in the third quarter of 2025, includes an impressive arsenal of technology: 12 Toro® TH663i trucks, 10 Toro LH621i loaders, 8 Sandvik DD422i development drills, 1 Sandvik DL432i longhole drill, and 1 Sandvik Rhino 100 raise borer. This contract goes far beyond the delivery of machines: it also includes a Remote Monitoring service, enabling real-time tracking of the fleet's performance and optimizing its efficiency. The first deliveries will begin in the third quarter of 2025 and continue until the second quarter of 2026.

Khoemacau: A Jewel of the Kalahari Copper Belt

Nestled in the heart of the Kalahari Copper Belt, the Khoemacau mine is already a major underground site and is currently undergoing an accelerated expansion phase. Since its acquisition in March 2024, operator MMG has implemented an ambitious strategy: to increase annual copper production to 60,000 tonnes within two years. This growth will be made possible by the existing 3.65 Mt/y processing plant and improved accessibility to higher-grade areas.

But the horizon is even broader. In the long term, MMG plans to more than double this capacity, targeting annual production of 130,000 tonnes of copper in concentrate. To achieve this, a new 4.5 Mt/y processing complex will be built, accompanied by the development of new mining areas and neighboring deposits. Initial preparatory work is already underway, with the main construction site scheduled for 2026, with first concentrate production expected as early as 2028.
