« C’est une partie de patience », résume Dominic te Wierik, directeur des ventes et du marketing international minier de SANY. « Nous savons qu’il y a des fournisseurs déjà bien installés. Mais l’objectif est clair : faire notre place. Et nous allons y parvenir étape par étape. »

Avec son collègue Denis Orlov, directeur des grands comptes miniers, te Wierik incarne ce virage stratégique. Tous deux cumulent des décennies d’expérience chez des géants comme Caterpillar, Bucyrus, Hitachi ou Rolls-Royce Power Systems. Pourtant, même pour eux, les installations ultramodernes de SANY en Chine réservent des surprises.

Orlov se souvient de sa visite récente à l’usine d’excavatrices de Kunshan, près de Shanghai :
« Vous discutez avec un client en marchant le long de la ligne de production, vous vous retournez… et une nouvelle machine sort déjà de l’atelier. Je n’avais jamais vu un tel niveau d’automatisation, même après toutes ces années dans l’industrie. »

Un ancrage solide avant le grand saut

Présente depuis une dizaine d’années en Australie, SANY s’est d’abord implantée sur le marché de la construction. Aujourd’hui, environ 3 500 machines de la marque sillonnent déjà le pays, soutenues par un réseau de concessionnaires établi. Mais l’ambition est claire : conquérir aussi le secteur minier.

La première étape de cette offensive se jouera en 2026, avec l’arrivée dans la région de Pilbara de camions hybrides SET150S de 136 tonnes de capacité. Plus de 200 de ces modèles roulent déjà en Chine, en Russie et en Ouzbékistan, certains ayant dépassé les 15 000 heures d’utilisation. Pour SANY, ce n’est pas seulement un déploiement commercial, c’est un signal : l’électrification progressive de la mine commence ici.

Derrière ces camions se dessine une stratégie : adapter des machines déjà éprouvées ailleurs, les calibrer aux standards australiens, et ouvrir progressivement la voie aux équipements plus imposants. Une logique de « marchepied », selon te Wierik :
« Le SET150S est une opportunité de nous rapprocher des opérateurs de taille intermédiaire, un segment clé en Australie. »

Orlov complète : « Ces 136 tonnes représentent environ 10 % du parc australien de camions miniers. Mais si l’on se concentre sur les mineurs de taille moyenne, ce chiffre grimpe à 30 ou 40 %. C’est un point d’entrée stratégique. »

La vague qui s’annonce

Le timing n’est pas un hasard. Le secteur minier mondial entre dans une phase de remplacement massif des équipements, après le pic de ventes de 2011-2013. En parallèle, l’essor des mines de métaux critiques pour la transition énergétique crée une demande pour des flottes plus agiles, plus faciles à automatiser et à électrifier.

SANY se dit prête. En Chine, la société fait déjà rouler 120 camions autonomes. Son intégration verticale lui offre aussi un avantage clé : des délais de livraison réduits à 4 à 6 mois, là où d’autres constructeurs dépendent de motoristes saturés par la demande mondiale en groupes électrogènes pour centres de données.

« Nous sommes optimistes pour 2026, et encore plus pour 2027 », anticipe te Wierik. « Nous savons que le cycle joue en notre faveur. »

Hybrides aujourd’hui, électriques demain

Au cœur de cette transition, le camion hybride de SANY se positionne comme une solution pragmatique. Ni totalement diesel, ni encore 100 % électrique, mais prêt pour ce futur.

« C’est un véhicule pensé pour la période de transition », explique Orlov. « Avec ses deux moteurs interchangeables, il offre à la fois des gains de sécurité, de maintenance et de consommation. Il n’exige pas de bouleversement organisationnel sur site. Et lorsque la technologie sera prête, nous serons déjà alignés. »

IMARC 2025 : une rampe de lancement

Cette ambition prendra une dimension symbolique lors de l’IMARC 2025, à Sydney, où SANY compte afficher haut et fort ses ambitions minières en Australie.

« C’est l’événement idéal pour construire une image et un réseau », estime te Wierik. « Non seulement c’est la plus grande conférence du secteur en Australie, mais surtout elle attire une audience internationale. Pour une marque comme la nôtre, c’est l’endroit où il faut être. »

Orlov abonde : « Les conversations qui s’y tiennent sont essentielles. Ce n’est pas seulement une vitrine, c’est un espace de dialogue stratégique. »

Du 21 au 23 octobre, plus de 10 000 délégués venus de 120 pays, 450 intervenants et 500 exposants se réuniront au Sydney ICC. Pour SANY, ce sera plus qu’un stand : ce sera un manifeste de son rôle futur dans l’industrie minière australienne.

Along with his colleague Denis Orlov, Director of Key Mining Accounts, te Wierik embodies this strategic shift. Both have decades of combined experience at giants such as Caterpillar, Bucyrus, Hitachi, and Rolls-Royce Power Systems. Yet even for them, SANY's ultra-modern facilities in China hold surprises.

Orlov recalls his recent visit to the excavator factory in Kunshan, near Shanghai:
"You're talking to a customer while walking along the production line, you turn around... and a new machine is already rolling out of the workshop. I've never seen such a level of automation, even after all these years in the industry."

A Solid Foothold Before the Big Leap

Present in Australia for about ten years, SANY first established itself in the construction market. Today, around 3,500 of the brand's machines already crisscross the country, supported by an established dealer network. But its ambition is clear: to conquer the mining sector as well.

The first stage of this offensive will take place in 2026, with the arrival in the Pilbara region of SET150S hybrid trucks with a 136-ton capacity. More than 200 of these models are already operating in China, Russia, and Uzbekistan, some having exceeded 15,000 hours of use. For SANY, this is not just a commercial deployment; it's a signal: the gradual electrification of mining begins here.

Behind these trucks lies a strategy: adapting machines already proven elsewhere, calibrating them to Australian standards, and gradually paving the way for larger equipment. A "stepping stone" approach, according to te Wierik:
"The SET150S is an opportunity to get closer to mid-sized operators, a key segment in Australia."

Orlov adds: "These 136-ton trucks represent approximately 10% of the Australian mining truck fleet." But if we focus on mid-sized miners, this figure rises to 30 or 40%. It's a strategic entry point."

The Coming Wave

The timing is no coincidence. The global mining sector is entering a phase of massive equipment replacement, following the sales peak of 2011-2013. At the same time, the boom in mining critical metals for the energy transition is creating demand for more agile fleets that are easier to automate and electrify.

SANY says it's ready. In China, the company already has 120 autonomous trucks in operation. Its vertical integration also gives it a key advantage: delivery times reduced to 4 to 6 months, whereas other manufacturers rely on engine manufacturers saturated by global demand for generators for data centers.

"We are optimistic for 2026, and even more so for 2027," Wierik predicts. "We know the cycle is in our favor."

Hybrids today, electric tomorrow

At the heart of this transition, SANY's hybrid truck is positioned as a pragmatic solution. Neither fully diesel nor yet 100% electric, but ready for this future.

"It's a vehicle designed for the transition period," explains Orlov. "With its two interchangeable engines, it offers gains in safety, maintenance, and fuel consumption. It doesn't require any organizational upheaval on site. And when the technology is ready, we'll already be aligned."

IMARC 2025: A Launching Pad

This ambition will take on a symbolic dimension at IMARC 2025 in Sydney, where SANY plans to loudly showcase its mining ambitions in Australia.

"It's the ideal event to build an image and network," says te Wierik. "Not only is it the largest industry conference in Australia, but it also attracts an international audience." For a brand like ours, it's the place to be."

Orlov agrees: "The conversations that take place there are essential. It's not just a showcase, it's a space for strategic dialogue."
