C'est ce que disent les parties prenantes privées et publiques du continent et d'ailleurs qui se sont réunies lors de l'événement industriel Transport Evolution Africa Forum & Expo à Durban la semaine dernière pour explorer les possibilités de connecter le système de transport africain grâce à des infrastructures durables.
Célébrant sa 10e année, le salon s'est imposé comme le plus grand événement de transport d'Afrique, accueillant les autorités portuaires, ferroviaires et routières de la région sous un même toit.
Le Transport Evolution Africa Forum & Expo 2022 a été ouvert par Mme Fikile Sithole, directrice générale adjointe : Services de transport, gouvernement provincial de KZN, et a attiré de grands changeurs de jeu de l'industrie, comme Transnet, Export Credit Insurance Corporation of South Africa (ECIC), Briggeman International , Afreximbank et Dube Tradeport. L'événement a accueilli plus de 2 350 personnes sur une période de deux jours et comprenait plus de 100 exposants qui ont présenté des solutions innovantes dans l'industrie du transport.
Co-implanté avec The Big 5 Construct KZN, ainsi que plusieurs autres événements, dont les Women in Transport Awards et le forum des PDG des transports, il a permis aux visiteurs d'accéder avec succès à l'ensemble de la chaîne de valeur des infrastructures de transport en Afrique. En outre, le forum stratégique sur les transports a abordé de front la mise en œuvre de la zone de libre-échange continentale africaine, les infrastructures, les investissements et les politiques transfrontalières, tandis que la plate-forme de réseautage B2B et l'exposition ont donné aux fournisseurs de solutions l'occasion de présenter leurs innovations et produits mondiaux.
Soulignant la contribution du secteur des transports de près d'un quart aux émissions mondiales totales de gaz à effet de serre, Yaa Agyare-Dwomoh, consultante chez Frost & Sullivan Africa, a déclaré qu'en Afrique du Sud, plus de 60 % des 1,2 million de véhicules sud-africains en circulation sont à moteur diesel, le reste étant alimenté à l'essence. Pour réaliser la transformation énergétique nécessaire à la décarbonisation, elle a suggéré que le secteur devrait s'appuyer de plus en plus sur des sources d'énergie renouvelables, telles que les biocarburants, le gaz naturel, l'éthanol, le propane, l'hydrogène et l'électricité.
Poursuivant la conversation sur la coordination de la transformation des secteurs de l'énergie et des transports, le Dr Marcelo Blumenfeld, professeur adjoint en systèmes de transport du futur de l'Université de Birmingham, Royaume-Uni, et chercheur industriel pour l'introduction de l'innovation au Birmingham Centre for Railroad Research and Education (BCRRE).
Alors que Blumenfeld a admis que de nombreux pays à faible revenu pourraient avoir du mal à justifier économiquement la mise en œuvre de chemins de fer électriques, il a déclaré que des options alternatives telles que la batterie et l'hydrogène étaient facilement disponibles, qui offrent des moyens viables et rentables de décarboner les chemins de fer, en améliorant les actifs sans avoir besoin de combustibles fossiles. En utilisant une étude de cas réalisée par le BCRRE en Tanzanie comme exemple, il a illustré comment les trains à hydrogène pourraient réduire les émissions de carbone jusqu'à 10 000 tonnes chaque année.

Transport Evolution Africa Forum celebrates record turnout

Bridging the gap between transport and energy sectors by reducing the reliance on fossil fuels and investing in cleaner modes of transport is critical for the creation of safer and more sustainable cities in Africa.
This is according to private and public stakeholders from the continent and beyond who gathered at industry event Transport Evolution Africa Forum & Expo in Durban last week to explore opportunities to connect Africa’s transport system through sustainable infrastructure.
Celebrating its 10th year, the trade show has established itself as Africa’s largest transport event, hosting the region’s port, rail and road authorities all under one roof.
The Transport Evolution Africa Forum & Expo 2022 was opened by Ms. Fikile Sithole, Deputy Director General: Transportation Services, KZN Provincial Government, and attracted big industry game changers, like Transnet, Export Credit Insurance Corporation of South Africa (ECIC), Briggeman International, Afreximbank and Dube Tradeport. The event welcomed over 2,350 people over the two-day period and included over 100 exhibitors who showcased innovative solutions across the transport industry.
Co-located with The Big 5 Construct KZN, as well as several other events including the Women in Transport Awards and The Transport CEO forum, it successfully gave visitors access to the entire African Transport Infrastructure value chain. In addition, the strategic transport forum tackled African Continental Free Trade Area implementation, infrastructure, investments and cross border policies head on, while the B2B networking platform and exhibition gave solution providers the opportunity to showcase their global innovations and products.
Highlighting the transport sector’s contribution of almost one quarter to total global greenhouse gas emissions, Yaa Agyare-Dwomoh, Consultant at Frost & Sullivan Africa said that in South Africa, over 60% of South Africa’s 1.2 million vehicles on the road are diesel-powered, with the remaining powered by petrol. To achieve the energy transformation required for decarbonisation, she suggested the sector would need to rely increasingly on renewable energy sources, such as biofuels, natural gas, ethanol, propane, hydrogen and electricity.
Continuing the conversation of coordinating the transformation of the energy and transport sectors was Dr Marcelo Blumenfeld, an Assistant Professor in Future Transport Systems from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, and an industrial fellow for Introducing Innovation at the Birmingham Centre for Railroad Research and Education (BCRRE).
While Blumenfeld admitted that many low-income countries may struggle to economically justify the implementation of electric powered railways, he said that alternative options such as battery and hydrogen were readily available, that provide viable and cost-effective ways to decarbonise railways, by upscaling existing assets without the need for fossil fuels. Using a case study carried out by BCRRE in Tanzania as an example, he illustrated how hydrogen-powered trains could reduce carbon emissions by as much as 10,000 tonnes every year.

Het overbruggen van de kloof tussen de transport- en de energiesector door de afhankelijkheid van fossiele brandstoffen te verminderen en te investeren in schonere vervoerswijzen is van cruciaal belang voor het creëren van veiligere en duurzamere steden in Afrika.
Dit is volgens private en publieke belanghebbenden van het continent en daarbuiten die vorige week bijeenkwamen op het branche-evenement Transport Evolution Africa Forum & Expo in Durban om mogelijkheden te onderzoeken om het transportsysteem van Afrika te verbinden via duurzame infrastructuur.
De vakbeurs viert zijn 10e jaar en heeft zichzelf gevestigd als het grootste transportevenement van Afrika, met de haven-, spoor- en wegautoriteiten van de regio allemaal onder één dak.
Het Transport Evolution Africa Forum & Expo 2022 werd geopend door mevrouw Fikile Sithole, plaatsvervangend directeur-generaal: transportdiensten, provinciale overheid van KZN, en trok grote spelers in de sector aan, zoals Transnet, Export Credit Insurance Corporation of South Africa (ECIC), Briggeman International , Afreximbank en Dube Tradeport. Het evenement verwelkomde meer dan 2.350 mensen gedurende de tweedaagse periode en omvatte meer dan 100 exposanten die innovatieve oplossingen in de transportsector presenteerden.
Samen met The Big 5 Construct KZN, evenals verschillende andere evenementen, waaronder de Women in Transport Awards en The Transport CEO-forum, gaf het bezoekers met succes toegang tot de hele waardeketen van de Afrikaanse transportinfrastructuur. Yaa Agyare-Dwomoh, Consultant bij Frost & Sullivan Africa, die de bijdrage van bijna een kwart van de transportsector aan de totale wereldwijde uitstoot van broeikasgassen benadrukte, zei dat in Zuid-Afrika meer dan 60% van de 1,2 miljoen voertuigen op de weg in Zuid-Afrika op diesel rijden, met de resterende aangedreven door benzine.
