Avec un programme d’investissements colossaux – 67 milliards de reais d’ici 2030 –, Vale affirme son ambition de conjuguer tradition minière et avenir durable. À travers ce plan, la compagnie entend moderniser ses complexes opérationnels, réduire l’usage de barrages de rejets, abaisser ses émissions carbone et accélérer l’adoption de technologies circulaires, qui permettent de réutiliser et de valoriser les ressources déjà extraites.

La mine de Capanema se distingue d’emblée par son caractère innovant. Exploitée à « humidité naturelle », elle évite totalement l’usage de l’eau dans le traitement du minerai et ne génère aucun rejet, supprimant ainsi le besoin de barrage. Plus encore, elle introduit une flotte de cinq camions hors-route autonomes Caterpillar 789D, véritable symbole d’un futur où l’automatisation rime avec efficacité et sécurité. Ces mastodontes, suivis à distance depuis la salle de contrôle de Brucutu, témoignent du partenariat étroit entre Vale, Caterpillar et son concessionnaire brésilien Sotreq.

La réactivation de Capanema, restée silencieuse pendant 22 ans, a mobilisé 5,2 milliards de reais. Cinq années de travaux, plus de 40 entreprises impliquées et près de 6 000 travailleurs, majoritairement locaux, ont permis de moderniser les installations et de les intégrer aux autres mines de la région. Aujourd’hui, 800 emplois permanents font revivre le site, qui devrait ajouter 15 millions de tonnes de fer par an à la production de Vale, contribuant à atteindre les 340–360 Mt/y prévus pour 2026.

« Minas Gerais est au cœur de notre transformation. Nous y puisons des leçons, nous y vivons une profonde évolution culturelle, et surtout, nous avançons en partenariat avec sa population. Capanema illustre cette nouvelle phase : une exploitation responsable, innovante et respectueuse de l’environnement », a déclaré Gustavo Pimenta, PDG de Vale.

L’impact économique de ces investissements est majeur : 440 millions de reais en redevances annuelles, environ 3 milliards en salaires, et près de 60 000 professionnels mobilisés directement ou indirectement. Mais au-delà des chiffres, c’est une vision qui s’impose : transformer le visage de la mine en conjuguant sécurité, durabilité et innovation.

Vale mise ainsi sur la filtration des rejets, l’empilement à sec, l’élimination progressive des barrages en amont et le renforcement de la surveillance géotechnique. Déjà, près de 60 % du programme de décaractérisation a été mené à bien, avec des structures surveillées 24h/24 pour garantir la sécurité des communautés environnantes et protéger l’environnement.

Depuis 2020, l’entreprise intensifie également les pratiques de « mine circulaire » : retraitement de déchets miniers, transformation de résidus en sable durable ou en blocs de construction, autant d’initiatives qui réduisent les risques tout en réinsérant les matériaux dans le cycle productif. Rien qu’au premier semestre 2025, ces programmes ont permis de produire 9 millions de tonnes, soit une hausse de 14 % par rapport à l’année précédente. L’objectif est clair : d’ici 2030, 10 % de la production totale de Vale proviendra de ces sources circulaires, dont 80 % issues du Minas Gerais.

Ainsi, Capanema n’est pas seulement la renaissance d’une mine endormie depuis deux décennies. Elle est le symbole d’un engagement renouvelé : celui d’une exploitation minière plus sûre, plus propre et tournée vers l’avenir, où innovation technologique et respect de la planète avancent enfin main dans la main.

Through this plan, the company intends to modernize its operational complexes, reduce the use of tailings dams, lower its carbon emissions, and accelerate the adoption of circular technologies, which allow the reuse and recovery of resources already extracted.

The Capanema mine immediately stands out for its innovative nature. Operated at "natural humidity," it completely avoids the use of water in ore processing and generates no waste. thus eliminating the need for a dam. Furthermore, it is introducing a fleet of five autonomous Caterpillar 789D off-road trucks, a true symbol of a future where automation goes hand in hand with efficiency and safety. These behemoths, monitored remotely from the Brucutu control room, are a testament to the close partnership between Vale, Caterpillar, and its Brazilian dealer, Sotreq.

The reactivation of Capanema, which had remained silent for 22 years, mobilized R$5.2 billion. Five years of work, more than 40 companies involved, and nearly 6,000 workers, mostly local, have enabled the modernization of the facilities and their integration with other mines in the region. Today, 800 permanent jobs are revitalizing the site, which is expected to add 15 million tons of iron ore per year to Vale's production, helping to reach the 340–360 Mt/y forecast for 2026.

Since 2020, the company Vale is also intensifying "circular mining" practices: reprocessing mining waste, transforming tailings into sustainable sand or building blocks—all initiatives that reduce risks while reintegrating materials into the production cycle. In the first half of 2025 alone, these programs produced 9 million tons, a 14% increase over the previous year. The goal is clear: by 2030, 10% of Vale's total production will come from these circular sources, 80% of which will come from Minas Gerais.

Thus, Capanema is not just the rebirth of a mine that had been dormant for two decades. It is the symbol of a renewed commitment: to safer, cleaner, and forward-looking mining, where technological innovation and respect for the planet finally move hand in hand.

De Capanema-mijn valt meteen op door haar innovatieve karakter. Bovendien introduceert het bedrijf een vloot van vijf autonome Caterpillar 789D terreinwagens, een waar symbool voor een toekomst waarin automatisering hand in hand gaat met efficiëntie en veiligheid.
